It is narrated from al-Hakam bin al-A'raj or Husayn bin Abi al-Hurr that he said: I saw Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) perform the Friday prayer, then pray two rak'ahs immediately after it.
At this the people said (in objection or surprise): "He has completed it, he has completed it (that is, he joined the obligatory and the sunnah together)." When I mentioned this to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), he said (stating the gravity of this act): "It is dearer to me that small spears should pierce my belly and pass into one another than that I should deliberately do such a thing (that is, not leave a gap between the obligatory and the sunnah)."
The narrator said: Then I watched him closely on the following Friday; he performed the Friday prayer, then sat with his knees drawn up (holding them against his belly with his garment or hands), and did not perform any (voluntary or sunnah) prayer until he stood for the Asr prayer.
