وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : نَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو نَعَامَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ قَالَ : كَانَ أَبُو مُوسَى رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِذَا صَلَّى بِنَا الْغَدَاةَ يُقْرِئُنَا ، فَأَتَى عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، فَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ إِلَى جَنْبِي عَنِ الْوِتْرِ ، فَقَالَ : ثَلَاثٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ وَاحِدَةٍ ، وَخَمْسٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ ، وَسَبْعٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَمْسٍ .
It is narrated from Abu Tamimah that when Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) had led us in the morning prayer, he used to teach us the Noble Qur'an. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and a man sitting beside me asked him about the rak'ahs of witr, upon which he said: "Three rak'ahs of witr are dearer to me than one, five rak'ahs are more beloved to me than three, and seven rak'ahs are more preferable to me than five."
The chain of this report is sahih (authentic), and Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in his 'al-Musannaf'.
