It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he called for water for ablution, and at that time Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with them both) were with him. He performed ablution, washing the limbs three times each, then said: "I ask you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution exactly as I have just done?" They replied: "Yes." According to another narration, Sayyiduna Talhah, Sayyiduna al-Zubayr, Sayyiduna Sa'd and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) were seated in that gathering. He performed ablution in their presence while they watched, and in it too washing the limbs three times each is mentioned. Then he said to those present: "I ask you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution just as I have just done?" They said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did this because some report had reached him about the way certain people performed ablution.
