Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4467 — An indication about al-Hajjaj, al-Mukhtar

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until thirty liars (false claimants to prophethood) appear, among them Musaylimah (the Liar), (al-Aswad) al-Ansi and al-Mukhtar (bin Abi Ubayd). And the worst tribes of the Arabs are Banu Umayyah, Banu Hanifah and Thaqif."
[Musnad Abi Ya'la: 4467] In the chain of this narration, Sharik bin Abdullah al-Qadi, because of his memory, and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, because of his confusion (ikhtilat) and concealment (tadlis), are not free of criticism, and for this reason the hadith scholars have criticised its authenticity.
