Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4426 — The killing of Ammar at Siffin

Umar bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather, that Umm Abdullah bint Munabbih bin al-Hajjaj used to treat the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with great kindness, courtesy and good conduct. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her and asked: "O Umm Abdullah! How are you?" She said: I am well, O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, how are you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I too am well and in good health." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "And how is Abdullah?" She said: He too is well, but Abdullah is a man who has (completely) abandoned the world. So on the day of Siffin his father (Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As, may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Go out and fight. Abdullah said: O my father! How can you order me to fight when you have heard what (sayings about trials) there were in the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Amr said: I ask you by Allah, do you not know that in the last period of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) it happened that he (peace and blessings be upon him) took your hand, placed it in my hand and said: "Obey Amr bin al-As"? He replied: Yes! So Sayyiduna Amr said: (Then) I order you to fight. So he went out and took part in the battle. Then, when the flames of war blazed up, Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses:
The fire of war has flared up, so I have readied for it a horse with high withers and a strong back, which joins speed to yet more speed, and when the horses begin to pant from much running, it lengthens its stride; it is tall and broad of flank, and when it leaps out of the water it seems (in speed and strength) like a camel litter. And Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) also said:
Had (my wife) Juml seen my standing and the scene of battle at Siffin, the locks of her hair would have turned white that day (from terror); that evening when the people of Iraq came as though they were spring clouds raised by the southern winds, and we came upon them in such a state, falling (upon the enemy), as though our swords were the waves of the sea mounting one upon another; whenever I thought they had turned their backs and fled swiftly, new troops of theirs would appear before us and squadrons would stand firm; so through the best part of the day our mill of war and theirs kept turning, and no one's shoulders turned (from the field); they said to us: In our view you should pledge allegiance to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and we replied: Rather, our view is that we should strike one another (with swords).
Imam al-Harith recorded this report in his Musnad; its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah, who is da'if (weak); however, this story of Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he took part in the battle and fought because of the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is also mentioned in other reliable sources.
