It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ali bin Rabi'ah heard him addressing (the people) from the pulpit. Meanwhile a man came to him and said: "O Commander of the Believers! What is the matter, that I see you driving and turning people about (as you wish) just as a man drives his camels? Is this a special covenant given to you by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or is it some idea and plan of your own?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I have never lied, nor have I ever been given a false report; I have never gone astray, nor has anyone led me astray. Rather, this is an emphatic covenant from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the truth is that 'he who fabricates a lie has certainly failed' [Surah Ta Ha: 61]."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it in his Musnad; al-Rabi' bin Sahl in its chain is da'if (weak), but supporting and corroborating narrations (shawahid and mutaba'at) of this report exist in other books of hadith.
