It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, the Banu Umayyah are fighting me only because they claim that I killed Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas they have told an outright lie; they only seek power and kingship. If I were certain that swearing this oath before them at the Station of Ibrahim would remove the rancour from their hearts: 'By Allah, I neither killed Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) nor ordered his killing,' I would certainly do it. But the real matter is that they only want rule. And I have strong hope in Allah Almighty that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and I will be among those blessed ones about whom Allah Almighty has said: 'And We will remove whatever rancour is in their breasts; (they will be) brothers, on thrones facing one another' [Surah al-Hijr: 47]."
Some of the narrators in the chain of this report have been criticised; however, Sayyiduna Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) declaration that he was free of the killing of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is established by other sahih and reliable reports.
