It is narrated from Abu Qilabah that a man from Quraysh called Thumamah, who was the governor of San'a, related that when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, he delivered a sermon and wept bitterly during it. Then, when he had composed himself somewhat, he said: "Today the caliphate of prophethood has been snatched away from the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and it has now turned into kingship and tyranny; (such that) whoever gains the upper hand over something will devour it."
Ibn Abi Umar recorded this report (athar) in his Musnad, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
