It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that our Prophet and our beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of his own passing a month before his death (may my soul be sacrificed for him). Then, when the time of parting drew near, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered us in the house of our mother, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at us kindly and his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes filled with tears. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the testimony of faith and said: "Welcome to you! May Allah keep you, may Allah have mercy on you, may Allah give you shelter, may Allah protect you, may Allah help you, may Allah benefit you, may Allah guide you, may Allah grant you success, may Allah grant you safety, may Allah accept you, may Allah provide for you and may Allah raise your ranks."
"I enjoin upon you the fear of Allah (taqwa), and I commend you to Allah and appoint Him as your guardian. I call you to witness that I am a clear warner to you: that you must not exalt yourselves against Allah among His servants and in His lands, for Allah Almighty has said to me and to you: 'That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltation upon the earth or corruption, and the best outcome is for the righteous.' [Surah al-Qasas: 83] And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: 'Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?' [Surah al-Zumar: 60]" We said: O Messenger of Allah! When is the time of your (peace and blessings be upon him) passing? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The appointed time has drawn near, and now the return is to Allah, to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary (Sidrat al-Muntaha), to the Garden of Refuge (Jannat al-Ma'wa), to the brimming cup of al-Kawthar, to the Highest Companion and to the most pleasant life." We said: Who will wash you (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The men of my household, those nearest in kinship and then those next nearest." We said: In what shall we shroud you (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In these very clothes of mine, or in Egyptian cloth, or in a Yemeni garment."
We said: Who will pray the funeral prayer over you (peace and blessings be upon him)? The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) wept and we wept too. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be calm, may Allah forgive you and reward you with the best reward on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me and shrouded me, place me on my bed in this very house of mine, at the edge of this very grave of mine, then go out from me for a while. For the first to pray over me (send blessings and mercy) will be my intimate friend and beloved Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, then the Angel of Death together with his entire army of angels. Then come in to me group after group, and pray over me and send greetings of peace. But do not hurt me with excessive praise, screaming or wailing. Let the praying begin with the men of my household and their women, then you after them. Convey my greetings of peace to those of my Companions who are not present here, and convey my greetings of peace also to those brothers of mine who will enter my religion after you. I call you to witness that I have sent greetings of peace to everyone who follows my religion from today until the Day of Resurrection." We said: Who will lower you (peace and blessings be upon him) into the grave? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My family, together with many angels who will be seeing you from where you cannot see them."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: At this point there is a rebuttal of Imam al-Bayhaqi, where he said that Sallam al-Tawil was alone in narrating this report from Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Rahman,
whereas Imam al-Bazzar narrated it through Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Samurah, Abd al-Rahman al-Muharibi and Ibn al-Asbahani, that he narrated from Murrah, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Our beloved and our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), may my father be sacrificed for him and may my soul be ransomed for him, informed us of his own passing a year before his death. Then, when the time of parting drew near (the narrator mentioned the whole hadith), and at the end of it he said: "And whoever enters your religion with you after me, I call you to witness that I send greetings of peace (the narrator said: I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) said) to him and to everyone who follows me in my religion from this day of mine until the Day of Resurrection."
Imam al-Bazzar said: This report has been narrated from Murrah through several routes, and all the chains from Murrah are close to one another. Abd al-Rahman al-Asbahani did not hear it directly from Murrah; rather, he was informed of it from him. And we do not know of anyone besides Murrah who narrated it from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
