Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that at the time of the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the people heard a sound, and Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) rushed forward. In doing so, his foot touched the back of one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said (by way of apology): "O my mother! O my mother! O my mother! Do not blame me for this (mistake)." Then he reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The Highest Companion (that is, the company of Allah Almighty)." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I knew that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had been given the choice (between remaining in this world and meeting his Lord)." Then, when Allah Almighty decreed death for His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) washed him (peace and blessings be upon him), while Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) handed them the water from behind the screen. He said: "Nothing prevented me from washing him (peace and blessings be upon him) (taking part directly) except that we were boys and used to carry stones when the mosque was being built" (and so on to the end of the hadith).
The chain of this report has a break (inqita'). Also, Ibrahim bin al-Hakam bin Aban narrated something similar from his father.
