It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that they both said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us with a sermon before his death, and this was the last sermon he (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered in Madinah before he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to meet Allah Almighty. Then the narrator mentioned a long hadith in which (these words also) occur, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Indeed I have now grown old, my bones have become weak, my body has become frail and exhausted, I have been informed of my death, the time for the completion of my life's term has drawn near, and I long to meet my Lord. Listen! This is the last covenant (of worldly meeting) between me and you. As long as I am alive, you see me, but when I die, Allah Almighty is my successor (guardian and protector) over every Muslim." And (at the end he said): "Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."
The chain of this report contains narrators such as Dawud bin al-Muhabbar and Maysarah bin Abd Rabbih, who are liars and fabricators, on account of which this report, according to the hadith scholars, is extremely da'if (weak) and fabricated (mawdu').
