It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I will certainly find out how much longer the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will remain among us. So he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Would that you had something made (to sit on) on which you could sit, which would protect you from the dust and keep the crowding and disputing of the people away from you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I will leave them in this very state, pulling at my cloak with me, treading on my heels, with their dust falling on me, until Allah Almighty Himself grants me relief from them." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I understood that the time of his (peace and blessings be upon him) remaining among us had become very short. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in the intensity of his emotion): "By Allah, I hope that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will live on until he cuts off the hands and tongues of those hypocrites who say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has died." At this Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people! Does any of you have any covenant or instruction from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this?" The people said: No. He said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not depart from this world until he had cut all ties (of disbelief) and joined the bonds (of truth). He (peace and blessings be upon him) fought wars and made peace, married women and divorced, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) left you upon a very clear, bright highway and an open path. And if the situation is as Umar says, Allah Almighty is fully able to remove the earth from over him (peace and blessings be upon him) and bring him out to us again. So stand aside from between us and him so that we may bury him, for the same human effects (after death) may appear on his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed body as appear on other human beings."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Al-Tabarani narrated something similar from the hadith of Ibn Uyaynah, from Ayyub, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).
