It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the battle of Hunayn took place, the people (scattered and) fell back from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), except Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib and Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with them both). At that time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) to call out: "O people of Surah al-Baqarah! O company of the Ansar!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) further urged that Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj be called. When they heard the call, they turned back (answering it) in such a way that, by Allah, I can only liken them to she-camels that come yearning at the call of their young. Then, when the two sides met and the fighting grew fierce, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the oven of battle has grown hot (that is, the battle has reached its peak)." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of white pebbles, threw them (towards the enemy) and said: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah, they are defeated!" On that day Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was the fiercest of all the people in fighting in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
