It is narrated from Ishaq bin Rahwayh that Ibn Ishaq related: When Suraqah bin Malik returned, having failed in his pursuit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), he began to speak about the astonishing incident that happened with his horse and the severe hardship he suffered in that pursuit. When Abu Jahl heard this, he feared that Suraqah, having seen all that, might accept Islam, so he composed these verses about it: "O Banu Mudlij, I fear that this foolish Suraqah of yours may go astray, inclining towards the support and help of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Keep a close watch on him so that he does not separate from your community, or else after attaining honour and leadership you will be scattered. This fool of the tribe thinks that he has brought some doubt against the clear and rightly guided path of truth. How can his word be the truth when he could not present any clear, true and sound proof? Rather, he left us in anger like a stranger, heading for Yathrib; alas, how far his birthplace has become from him! And had he not fled and reached Yathrib, the cut of the fine Mashrafi swords would have grieved him." Suraqah, replying to these words of Abu Jahl, said: "O Abu al-Hakam, by Allah, had you seen the state of my horse when its legs were sinking into the ground, you would have been astounded, and you would not have had the slightest doubt that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has come to us with such a clear proof and evidence that no one can conceal it. Restrain your people from inciting them against him, for I see that one day his religion will certainly prevail and its signs will become manifest. It will be a matter in which everyone will long for victory and help; and how good it would be if all people made peace with him."
This report is part of the Sirah of Ibn Ishaq, and its text contains testimony to the miracles that occurred during the journey of the Hijrah.
