Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 418Q — The sin of one who is not moderate

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a long sermon to us, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned: "Whoever leads a group in prayer while they are pleased and content with him, and he adopts moderation and balance with them in his attendance (standing), recitation, bowing, prostration and sitting, he will have a reward equal to that of all those praying behind him. But whoever does not act with moderation in these matters, his prayer will be thrown back at him (that is, it will not be accepted) and it will not rise above his collarbones; and he will be like an unjust ruler who transgresses limits, who did not care for the welfare and reform of his subjects nor implement the commands of Allah Almighty among them." At this, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, what will be the fate of that unjust, transgressing ruler who neither reformed his subjects nor established the commands of Allah among them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will be the fourth of the four persons who will be in the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection: Iblis, Pharaoh, Cain who unjustly killed a human soul, and the fourth is that unjust ruler."
