It is narrated from an elder of the people of Kufah that Sayyiduna al-Hakam bin Amr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a letter from Khurasan to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that a great number of the polytheists had fallen upon them (that is, they had surrounded the Muslims). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote back to him: "Place the warriors of the tribe of Bakr bin Wa'il opposite them (in the front rank), for I have indeed heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The enemy will never prevail over Bakr bin Wa'il.'"
Imam Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Umayyah bin Bistam narrated this hadith to us, from Mu'tamir, from Maslamah bin Muharib (this narration is mentioned under the virtues of Bakr bin Wa'il).
