It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that I went to Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was lying on his bed reciting some verses of poetry; it seemed as though he was humming them melodiously. So I said to him: "Rahimakallah" (May Allah have mercy on you), Allah Almighty has given you in exchange for these verses something far better than them, namely the Noble Qur'an. Thereupon he replied: "Do you fear that I will die (a natural death) on my bed? No, by Allah! Allah Almighty will never deprive me of that (great blessing of martyrdom), when I have killed a hundred (disbelievers) single-handedly, besides those warriors in whose killing I took part alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (in various battles)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic); Imam Ahmad bin Mani' recorded it in his Musnad, and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
