Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 4041 — The virtue of Abu Umamah

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to my people (to invite them to Islam). When I reached them I was utterly exhausted with hunger, and they were (sitting and) eating blood. They said to me: 'Come (join us).' I said: 'I have come to you to forbid you from this very vile practice.' Then, overcome by the severity of hunger and thirst, I fell asleep, and in my dream someone came to me bringing a vessel containing something to drink, and he said: 'Take it.' So I took it and drank, until I was fully satisfied and my thirst was quenched. (Meanwhile) a man among them said: 'A man from among the nobles of your people has come to you, and you have not offered him even a sip of diluted milk?' He relates: Then they brought me diluted milk, but I said: 'I have no need of it now.' They said (in surprise): 'But we saw you in a state of severe hardship and hunger?' Then I showed them my stomach (which had been miraculously filled), and they all, to the very last of them, entered the fold of Islam. May Allah Almighty be pleased with them all."
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated this hadith in his Musnad; its chain contains Sadaqah bin Hurmuz al-Qasmali, about whom the statements of the hadith scholars differ. However, other supporting reports of this incident exist in the books of Sirah and hadith.
