It is narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was told that some people came to Ali bin al-Husayn (Imam Zayn al-Abidin) (may Allah have mercy on him) and praised him excessively, so he said: "Woe to you! How great liars you are, and how bold and reckless you have become with regard to Allah Almighty! We are merely some of the righteous people of our community, and it is enough for us to be counted among the righteous of our community."
Al-Harith recorded this narration in his Musnad (Bughyat al-Bahith); its chain contains a balagh (an unattributed report) of Sufyan al-Thawri, because of which it is munqati' (broken), but Imam Zayn al-Abidin's aversion to excessive praise and his perfect humility are established by other authentic evidence.
