Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3865 — The virtue of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was some dispute and exchange of reproaches between Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), upon which Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) apologised to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), but he did not accept his apology. When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it weighed very heavily upon him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat down, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his blessed face away from him. He moved and sat on the other side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away again. Then he got up and sat directly in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) still turned his blessed face away. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I see you turning away from me, and I think it is only because of something that has reached you about me. What worth then is my kneeling like this while you are turning away from me? By Allah, I do not care at all to live in this world even for a moment while you are turning away from me." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one to whom Abu Bakr apologised and you did not accept it from him? I came to you all (with the message of Allah), and you all said: 'You have lied,' while this companion of mine said: 'You have spoken the truth.'" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "Will you leave me and my companion alone?"
Its chain is da'if (weak); however, it has a shahid (corroborating narration) in Sahih al-Bukhari from the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him).
