It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to make peace (between people). Meanwhile, the time of prayer came, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): "The time of prayer has come, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is not present here at the moment. Is it your view that I should call the adhan and the iqamah, and you lead the people in prayer?" He said: "If you wish (then fine)." So Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan and said the iqamah, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward and led the people in prayer. When they had finished the prayer, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and asked: "Have you prayed?" They said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who led you in prayer?" They said: "Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You did well. It does not befit a people among whom Abu Bakr is present that anyone other than him should lead them in prayer."
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' narrated this hadith in his Musnad; however, the narrator in its chain, Isa bin Maymun al-Jurayri al-Basri, is da'if (weak), though the original incident of his leading the prayer is established in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim.
