Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3804 — The Prophet ﷺ giving justice against

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a poor and weak man from among the Muhajirun had a need to put before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He wanted to meet him (peace and blessings be upon him) in private so that he could present his need. In those days the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was encamped at al-Batha'. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would come at night and perform tawaf of the House of Allah, until, when the time of dawn drew near, he would return and lead his Companions in the morning prayer.
The narrator said: One night he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed by being occupied with tawaf until morning came. So when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had settled properly on his mount, that same man came in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and took hold of the nose-rein of his (peace and blessings be upon him) she-camel, and then said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have a matter with you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your need will soon be fulfilled." But he refused to let go of the rein. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) feared that the man would hold him back from the prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him a light blow with the whip and went on, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in the morning prayer.
When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he turned his blessed face towards the people, and whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) did that, the Companions understood that some important matter had arisen. So the people gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is the man whom I struck with the whip a little while ago?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words: "If he is among the people, let him stand up." The narrator said: That man began to say (in fear): 'A'udhu billahi thumma bi-rasulihi' (I seek refuge with Allah and then with His Messenger). But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "Come close, come close to me," until he came near him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down in front of him, handed him the whip and said: "Take your whip and take retaliation (qisas)." He said: "I seek refuge with Allah from whipping His Prophet." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Take your whip; there is no sin upon you." He said a second time: "I seek refuge with Allah from whipping His Prophet." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then (it remains) that you forgive me." He threw down the whip and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have forgiven you."
Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you remember the Night of al-Aqabah? I was driving your mount and you (peace and blessings be upon him) were dozing. Whenever the mount slowed down and I took hold of its rein, it would shy away, and during that a stroke of the whip from me struck you (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I said that the people had reached you, and you (peace and blessings be upon him) said that there was no harm upon me. Now, O Messenger of Allah, take retaliation from me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have forgiven you." He insisted: "Take retaliation from me, for that is dearer to me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him once with the whip. The narrator said: I saw him (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr) writhing from the pain of that blow. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing everyone): "O people! Fear Allah, for by Allah, no believer wrongs another believer except that Allah Almighty will certainly take retribution for the wronged one from the wrongdoer on the Day of Resurrection."
