It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. It was his blessed habit (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever he went to relieve himself, he would go so far that he disappeared from sight. Once we halted in a barren plain in which there was neither any tree nor any landmark, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jabir, go and fill the water-skin with water, then come with us until we are hidden from people's sight." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: (There we saw that) before him (peace and blessings be upon him) were two trees with a few cubits' distance between them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Jabir, go to these two trees and tell them: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you both to join together so that I may sit behind you." So both trees (as soon as they received the command) came close and joined together, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat behind them; then (after he had finished) they both went back to their places. The narrator says: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in that wilderness (in such calm and reverence) as if birds were sitting on our heads, giving us shade. Meanwhile a woman came before us with her child and said: O Messenger of Allah, Satan seizes this child three times every day (that is, he has fits). The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, then took hold of the child and seated him in front of himself on the front part of the saddle. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be gone, disgraced and humiliated, O enemy of Allah! I am the Messenger of Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) handed the child back to the woman. When we had completed our journey and passed by the same place (on the way back), that woman met us again with her child, and she had two rams with her. She said: O Messenger of Allah, accept this gift from me; by the One who sent you with the truth, it (the affliction) has not returned to this child again. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take one of them and return the other." The narrator says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, and we also went along with him while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us (and our state was the same), as if birds were over our heads giving us shade. Suddenly a runaway camel came and fell down in prostration between the two rows of people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped and asked the people: "Who is the owner of this camel?" Some young men of the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, it is ours. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with it?" They said: We have been drawing water with it for twenty years; now it has put on some fat (that is, it has become plump), so we intended to slaughter it and distribute its meat among our servants. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you sell it to me?" They said: Rather, O Messenger of Allah, it is yours. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you will not sell it, then (very well) treat it kindly until its death comes to it." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah, we are more entitled than the animals to prostrate to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If it were permissible for any human being to prostrate to another human being, I would have commanded women to prostrate to their husbands."
Imam al-Darimi narrated it in full in his Musnad through Ubaydullah. The narrator Isma'il is sayyi' al-hifz (of poor memory), and Imam al-Daraqutni mentioned that he is alone in narrating this long hadith. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah narrated only its opening part (in the chapter on purification) with these words: "Whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to relieve himself, he would go so far that no one could see him."
