It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Jubayr, would you like that when you set out on a journey you are the finest of all your companions in appearance and attire, and have more provisions than all of them?" I said: "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, (I certainly want that)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then recite these five surahs (during the journey): 'Say: O disbelievers' [Surah al-Kafirun: 1], 'When the help of Allah and the victory come' [Surah al-Nasr: 1], 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1], 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak' [Surah al-Falaq: 1] and 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind' [Surah al-Nas: 1]; and begin every surah with 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), and end your recitation also with 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)." Sayyiduna Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was a wealthy man of great means, yet (before acting upon this prophetic prescription) whenever I set out on a journey I was the most dishevelled and shabby in appearance among my companions and the shortest of provisions. Then, ever since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me these surahs and I began reciting them regularly, I would remain the finest in condition and the most plentiful in provisions among my companions until I returned from my journey.
Abu Ya'la recorded it in his Musnad, and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi graded it sahih (authentic) in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah.
