قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، ثَنَا مِنْدَلٌ ، عَنِ الْكَلْبِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا - ، قَالَ : أَسْلَمَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - ، وَتَأَخَّرَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فِي الْمُشْرِكِينَ ، فَأَنْزَلَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَلا تُمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ - يَقُولُ : إِنْ أَسْلَمَ رَجُلٌ وَأَبَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ ، فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ إِنْ شَاءَ أَرْبَعًا سِوَاهَا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam while his wife stayed behind among the polytheists. On this occasion Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this command: "And do not hold on to marriage ties with disbelieving women" [Surah al-Mumtahanah: 10], the meaning of which is: "If a man accepts Islam and his wife refuses (to accept Islam), then that husband may, if he wishes, marry four women besides her."
