وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، ثَنَا ابْنُ بَكْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جَابِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءٌ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ ، فَلَقِيتُ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ ، فَقُلْتُ : حَدِّثْنِي بِحَدِيثِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قُمْ مَعِي ، فَقُمْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دُفِعْتُ إِلَى بَابِ دَارٍ ، فَأَجْلَسَنِي عَلَى بَابِهَا ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ ، فَلَبِثَ مَلِيًّا ، ثُمَّ دَعَانَا ، فَأَدْخَلَنَا عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ ، فَقَالَ : هَذِهِ بِنْتُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا - ، فَسَلْهَا عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ ، فَقُلْتُ : حَدِّثِينِي عَنْهُ رَحِمَكِ اللهُ ، قَالَتْ : لَمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ الْآيَةَ ، دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ ، وَأَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ ، وَطَفِقَ يَبْكِي ، فَافْتَقَدَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : مَا شَأْنُ ثَابِتٍ ؟ قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، مَا نَدْرِي مَا شَأْنُهُ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَغْلَقَ بَابَهُ ، وَهُوَ يَبْكِي فِيهِ ، فَدَعَاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَأَلَهُ : مَا شَأْنُكَ ؟ قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَأَنَا شَدِيدُ الصَّوْتِ ، وَأَخَافُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلِي ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَسْتَ مِنْهُمْ ، بَلْ تَعِيشُ بِخَيْرٍ ، وَتَمُوتُ بِخَيْرٍ .
It is narrated from the daughter of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ata al-Khurasani (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I came to Madinah and met a man of the Ansar. I requested him: "Narrate to me some hadith about Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "Certainly, come with me." I went along with him until I reached the door of a house. He seated me at the door and went inside himself, and he remained inside for quite a while. Then he called us and took us in to a woman and said: "This is the daughter of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him); ask her whatever you wish." I said: "Rahimaki Allah (may Allah have mercy on you), tell me something about him (your father)." She said: "When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this blessed verse to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): 'O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet' [Surah al-Hujurat: 2], he (Sayyiduna Thabit) secluded himself in his house, shut his door and began to weep bitterly. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) found him absent (from the gathering) and asked: 'What is the matter with Thabit?' The Companions said: 'O Messenger of Allah! We do not know his actual condition, except that he has shut his door and is sitting inside weeping.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned him and asked: 'What is the matter with you?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! This verse has been revealed to you: O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet [Surah al-Hujurat: 2]; and I am by nature a man with a loud voice. I fear that my deeds may have been rendered void.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) reassured him, saying: 'You are not one of them; rather you will live in goodness and you will die in goodness.'"
Imam Abu Ya'la related it in his Musnad; the core of the event is also found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and its chain is of hasan (good) grade.
