قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ زَاذَانَ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : سَتُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى قَوْمٍ أُولِي بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ تُقَاتِلُونَهُمْ أَوْ يُسْلِمُونَ فَإِنْ تُطِيعُوا يُؤْتِكُمُ اللهُ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا وَإِنْ تَتَوَلَّوْا كَمَا تَوَلَّيْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا قَالَ : فَارِسُ وَالرُّومُ .
It is narrated from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty: "You will soon be called (to battle) against a people of great might and fierce in war; you will fight them, or they will accept Islam. Then if you obey (this call), Allah will give you an excellent reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will afflict you with a painful punishment" [Surah al-Fath: 16], that he said concerning the identity of this people: "It refers to the people of Persia and the Romans."
