Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3673 — Surah al-Furqan

It is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "a prohibited barrier" [Surah al-Furqan: 22], that he said: "It was the custom among the Arabs that when a woman saw something she disliked, she would say (seeking refuge): 'Hijran,' meaning 'This is forbidden and utterly barred (from me).'"
This report is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him), and it explains the linguistic usage of this Qur'anic word current in the pre-Islamic era and its exegetical meaning.
