قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ ، أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، مَرَّ قَبْلَ الطَّاعُونِ الْجَارِفِ ، فَجَعَلَ يَمُرُّ بِالْمَسْجِدِ قَدْ أُحْدِثَ فَيَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ . فَيَقُولُ : هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ أَحْدَثَهُ بَنُو فُلَانٍ .
فَقَالَ : كَانَ يُقَالُ : ( يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَبْنُونَ الْمَسَاجِدَ [يَتَبَاهَوْنَ] بِهَا ، ثُمَّ لَا يَعْمُرُونَهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ) .
قَالَ أَيُّوبُ : فَجَاءَ الْجَارِفُ فَجَرَفَهُمْ .
عَلَّقَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ ، وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مَرْفُوعًا .
فَقَالَ : كَانَ يُقَالُ : ( يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ يَبْنُونَ الْمَسَاجِدَ [يَتَبَاهَوْنَ] بِهَا ، ثُمَّ لَا يَعْمُرُونَهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ) .
قَالَ أَيُّوبُ : فَجَاءَ الْجَارِفُ فَجَرَفَهُمْ .
عَلَّقَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ ، وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مَرْفُوعًا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that before the coming of the Ta'un al-Jarif (the "Sweeping Plague", a deadly epidemic that wiped out whole settlements), whenever he passed by a mosque that had been newly built, he would ask about it, and the people would tell him: "This is a mosque that such-and-such a tribe has recently built."
At this Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that it used to be said: "A time will come upon people when they will build mosques and boast and make a show of them, then they will fill them (with remembrance and worship) only very little."
Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Then that all-sweeping plague came and wiped them all out."
Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it as mu'allaq (without a connected chain), and this narration has also been narrated as marfu'.
