قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ دِرْهَمٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نَبْنِي الْمَسْجِدَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَوْسِعُوهُ [تَمْلَؤُوهُ ] " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were building the mosque, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make it (very) wide and spacious, (for soon) you will fill it (with the large number of worshippers)."
Imam Abu Dawud recorded this hadith in his Sunan in the chapter 'The building of mosques and their spaciousness', and its chain contains narrators such as Muhammad bin Dirham al-Azdi and Ka'b bin Abd al-Rahman al-Azdi.
