قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، ثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ ، ثَنَا عُمَرُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْفَضْلَ بْنَ ثَوْرٍ ، يَقُولُ : حَدَّثَنِي فُلَانٌ ، أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ تَعَالَى صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَا قِيلَ ، وَلَمْ يَقُلْ أَحَدٌ قَبْلُ كَلِمَةً هِيَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ، وَلَا سَأَلَ السَّائِلُونَ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ شَيْئًا أَفْضَلَ مِنَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ " .
It is narrated from an unidentified narrator that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never has anything been said, nor has anyone before uttered any word, that is more virtuous than 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no true god except Allah); and those who beseech in the court of Allah have never asked their Lord for anything better or more virtuous than forgiveness and pardon."
Because the name of one narrator in the chain of this hadith is unclear (mubham), its technical status is weak; however, the virtue of the word of Tawhid and the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah are established by other reliable and authentic hadith. Takhrij: Musnad Abi Ya'la: 3372.
