Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3371 — The supplication of the sick

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of a matter that is entirely true? Whoever says these words when first lying on his sickbed during his illness, Allah Almighty will grant him release from the Fire of Hell." (The questioner) said: "Yes indeed (O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)), may my father and mother be ransomed for you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Know that when you reach the morning, do not count on the evening, and when you reach the evening, do not expect the morning; and the reality is that when, in this illness of yours, you say these words while lying on your bed, Allah Almighty will save you from the Fire through them. Those words are: 'La ilaha illallah, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa hayyun la yamut, subhana rabbi al-'ibadi wa al-bilad, al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi 'ala kulli hal, Allahu akbar, kibriya'u rabbina wa jalaluhu wa qudratuhu fi kulli makan, Allahumma in kunta amradtani li-qabdi ruhi fi maradi hadha faj'al ruhi fi arwahi man sabaqat lahum minka al-husna' (There is no god worthy of worship except Allah; He alone gives life and He alone causes death; He is the Ever-Living who never perishes. Glorified is the One who is Lord of all the servants and all the lands (the universe). All praise belongs to Allah, praise that is abundant, pure and blessed, and thanks be to Allah in every state. Allah is the Greatest; the grandeur of our Lord, His majesty and His power (encompass) every place. O Allah, if You have afflicted me with this illness in order to take my soul, then place my soul among the souls of those for whom al-husna [Surah al-Anbiya': 101], that is, goodness and Paradise, has already been decreed from You)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you die in this illness, you will go to the pleasure of Allah and to Paradise; and if you have committed sins, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will accept your repentance and forgive you."
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' narrated this hadith in his Musnad; Amir bin Yasaf in its chain is a weak narrator, but the various parts of this du'a are established by other reliable narrations.
