It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was praying when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Hold fast to comprehensive and complete supplications." When she finished her prayer, she asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min al-khayri kullihi, ma alimtu minhu wa ma lam a'lam, wa a'udhu bika min al-sharri kullihi ma alimtu minhu wa ma lam a'lam, wa a'udhu bika min al-nari wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw amal, Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannata wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw amal, Allahumma inni as'aluka min al-khayri ma sa'alaka abduka wa rasuluka Muhammad' (O Allah, I ask You for every good, what I know of it and what I do not know, and I seek refuge in You from every evil, what I know of it and what I do not know; and I seek refuge in You from the Fire and from every word and deed that brings one near to it. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that brings one near to it. O Allah, I seek from You the good which Your servant and Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked of You)."
Al-Jurayri corroborated this narration from Jabr, while Abu Na'amah contradicted him.
It is also narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to come in to her while she was praying, so she began clapping (to draw his attention), but he did not understand what she meant. Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived while the two of them were at the door, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you from adopting the comprehensive words and the openings of supplications?" She said: What are those comprehensive and concluding words? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min al-khayri kullihi ma alimtu minhu wa ma lam a'lam, ajilihi wa ajilihi, wa a'udhu bika min al-sharri kullihi ma alimtu minhu wa ma lam a'lam ajilihi wa ajilihi, Allahumma ma qadayta min qada'in faj'al aqibatahu rashada' (O Allah, I seek from You every kind of good, whether of this world or the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know; and I seek refuge in You from every kind of evil, whether of this world or the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, whatever decree You make for me, make its outcome guidance and goodness)."
