وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، ثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ قَالَ : إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَرَصَهُمُ الْبَرْدُ ، فَجَعَلُوا يَسْتَحْيُونَ أَنْ يَجِيئُوا فِي الْفَسَاسِيرِ وَالْعَبِيِّ ، فَفَقَدَهُمْ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : أَمْرُهُمْ كَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَأَصْبَحَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فِي عَبَاءَةٍ ، فَقَالُوا : أَصْبَحَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فِي عَبَاءَةٍ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّانِي ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّالِثُ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ فِي الْعَبَاءَةِ جَاؤُوا فِي أَكْسِيَتِهِمْ ، فَعَرَفَ وُجُوهًا قَدْ كَانَ فَقَدَهَا ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ أَحَدٌ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ ، أَوْ قَالَ : ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ .
It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz that when severe cold struck the students of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), they became shy of coming (to the gathering) dressed in thick woollen wraps and blankets. So when he (may Allah be pleased with him) found them absent and was informed of their situation, Sayyiduna Abu Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) himself came wearing a simple cloak ('aba'ah). Seeing this, people began to remark that today Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) has come wearing a cloak. Then he came in the same way on the second and third days as well. When the students saw him in the cloak, they too came wearing their own wraps. Then he recognised the faces that had previously been absent, and said: "Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'No one will enter Paradise in whose heart there is arrogance even the weight of a mustard seed,' or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'arrogance even the weight of an atom.'"
