It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla that Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him): "To proceed: the reality is that when a servant does deeds of obedience to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, comes to love him, and when Allah loves him, He makes him beloved to His creation as well. And indeed, when a servant does deeds of disobedience and sin against Allah Almighty, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, becomes displeased with him and detests him, and when Allah Almighty detests him, He makes him detested and disliked in the eyes of His creation as well."
Imam al-Bukhari recorded this hadith in al-Adab al-Mufrad (449), and its chain is sahih (authentic).
