It is narrated from a Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this; then he mentioned a long hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels of the night and the angels of the day gather at the Asr prayer and the Subh (Fajr) prayer. Then the angels of the day depart (towards the heavens) at the time of the Asr prayer and the angels of the night remain with you, and the angels of the night ascend at the time of the Subh prayer and the angels of the day remain with you. They say (in the court of Allah): We came to them while they were praying, and when we left them they were still praying; and we have left among them a man who, whenever any good reached him or any calamity befell him, was always certain that it was from You. Allah Almighty says: Put My servant to trial, or (He said:) Increase My servant (in blessings). Sufyan said: I do not remember with which of the two words He began. Then the angels put him to trial; then Allah says: Try him further, and he is tried; then He says: Try him even more (though He Himself knows best), and the angels say: 'Ay Rabbi' (O my Lord)! The trial has reached its limit. Then He says: Increase him further (in gifts and favour), and he is increased; then He says: Give him more, and he is increased further; then He says: Give him more (though He knows best), and the angels say: 'Ay Rabbi' (O my Lord)! The increase has reached its limit. Then Allah Almighty asks: How did you find My servant in trial, and how did you see him in ease and prosperity? The angels say: O our Lord! He is a most patient and most grateful servant. Then Allah Almighty says: Write the name of this servant of Mine among those whose rank, station and end will never be altered or changed until he meets Me."
