It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Qur'an was recited in the blessed gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and some poetry was also recited (melodiously). So it was said (in surprise): "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), can the Qur'an and poetry both come together in a single gathering?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it in his Musnad. Its chain contains the narrator Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, who is matruk (abandoned); however, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) listening to poetry in a gathering is established by other authentic hadith.
