It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever devises a false and fabricated report is (in sin) like the one who narrates it onward (that is, the one who invents a lie and the one who spreads it are equally sinful)." It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, how does he devise it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the man who meets another man and says (falsely) that such-and-such happened, and thus he initiates it. So let none of you ever become a key (that is, a means or opener of the way) to evil and falsehood."
The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever attributes to me something I did not say," has already been mentioned in the Book of Slaughtered Animals (al-Dhaba'ih).
