It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (addressing him): "O Abdullah! Do you know which handhold of Islam (that is, which religious bond and tie) is the strongest and most lasting?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keeping friendship and loyalty for the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, loving (someone) for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and hating (someone) for the sake of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted (this is the firmest bond of faith)."
Imam al-Tayalisi narrated it from al-Sa'q bin Hazn, from Aqil al-Ja'di, from Abu Ishaq, from Suwayd bin Ghafalah, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Imam Abu Bakr narrated it through Zayd bin al-Hubab from al-Sa'q bin Hazn al-Bakri with the same chain.
Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it through Shayban bin Farrukh from al-Sa'q with the same chain.
