Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2879 — What the believer is given

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has appointed two angels over His believing servant who write down his deeds. When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, takes the soul of that believing servant of His, the two of them say: 'O our Lord! You appointed us over this believing servant of Yours to record his deeds, and now You have taken him to Yourself; so grant us permission to ascend to the heaven.' Allah, Exalted and Majestic, says: 'My heaven is full of My angels who prostrate before Me.' Then the two of them say: 'Then grant us permission to dwell on the earth.' Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'My earth too is full of My creatures who prostrate to Me. Rather, the two of you stand at the grave of My servant, and there, until the Day of Resurrection, keep declaring My glory with Subhan Allah (tasbih), My oneness with La ilaha illallah (tahlil), My greatness with Allahu Akbar (takbir) and My praise with Alhamdulillah (hamd), and keep writing the reward of all this remembrance for My servant.'"
Musnad Abi Ya'la: 4083; its chain contains al-Haytham bin Jammaz, a da'if (weak) narrator.
