It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever spends the night or sleeps on a roof that has no parapet or protective barrier around it, the covenant of Allah Almighty (that is, the promise of protection and safety) has ended for him; and whoever shoots arrows in the darkness of the night (thoughtlessly or without any target), the covenant is also absolved from him; and whoever boards the sea when it is in severe storm and turbulence, the covenant of Allah Almighty has also ended for him."
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah recorded this hadith in his Musnad (Bughyat al-Bahith: 2813); Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Hakim also narrated it, and Allamah al-Albani declared it sahih (authentic) in 'Sahih al-Jami'' (6148).
