It is narrated from Ali bin Umarah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a bed was spread for Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) on a wide, spacious roof. Then at some hour of the night he ordered it to be removed from there, so the bed was brought down, and he said: "I very nearly spent this night in a state in which no covenant of protection (from Allah Almighty) would have remained for me."
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated this hadith in his Musnad, and the narrators of its chain are thiqat (trustworthy). This report reflects the legal ruling that forbids sleeping on a roof without a parapet, so that a person stays safe from falling and remains deserving of Allah's protection.
