قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَعْمَرَ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ عَلَى مَجْلِسٍ فِي طَرِيقٍ ، فَقَالَ : إِيَّاكُمْ وَالسَّبِيلَ ، فَإِنَّهَا سَبِيلُ النَّارِ وَالشَّيْطَانِ ، ثُمَّ مَضَى ، حَتَّى ظَنُّوا أَنَّهَا عَزْمَةٌ ثُمَّ جَاءَ ، فَقَالَ : إِلَّا أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا حَقَّ الطَّرِيقِ ، قَالُوا : وَمَا حَقُّ الطَّرِيقِ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَنْ تَغُضُّوا أَبْصَارَكُمْ ، وَتَهْدُوا الضَّالَّ ، وَتَرُدُّوا السَّلَامَ .
It is narrated from Yahya bin Ya'mar that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a gathering held on a road, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of (sitting on) the road, for it is the path of the Fire and of Satan." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went on, until the Companions thought that this saying of his (peace and blessings be upon him) was a definite and binding command. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came back and said: "Unless you fulfil the right of the road." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the right of the road? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lowering your gaze, guiding the one who has lost his way, and returning the greeting of salam."
