It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when a man was seen approaching. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) caught sight of him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What a bad man of his tribe he is!" or he said: "What a bad person he is!" Then when he came near him (peace and blessings be upon him), he gave him a place close to himself in his gathering. When that man got up and left, the Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! When you saw him you said, "What a bad man of his tribe he is" or "What a bad person he is", but then you seated him near you in your gathering? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, he is a hypocrite. In view of his hypocrisy I am merely treating him with courtesy and discretion, and I feared that he might poison the minds of others against me and corrupt them."
Imam al-Harith recorded it in his Musnad. Its chain contains a narrator named al-Khalil bin Zakariyya, who is weak, because of which there is criticism of its chain.
