It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Uwaymir! Increase your intellect and wisdom; as a result you will increase in nearness to your Lord." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, how is this possible for me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Completely avoid everything that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has forbidden, and fulfil the obligations of Allah Almighty as they deserve, and you will truly be counted intelligent. Moreover, along with the obligations, take great care to perform voluntary good deeds abundantly; through them you will attain elevation and honour in this world, and you will attain nearness, honour and standing in the court of your Lord."
Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in Shu'ab al-Iman; however, its chain contains Maysarah bin Abd Rabbih, a liar and wadda' (fabricator of hadith), because of which this report is very weak and munkar (denounced).
