Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the ignorant and foolish person (by his words and deeds) always reveals only his own evil and faults, however wise and pleasant of speech he may be in people's eyes; and indeed the person of intellect and insight brings to light only his own good qualities and excellence, however faulty and lowly he may be considered by people."
Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded this hadith in Shu'ab al-Iman. Its chain contains Musa bin Jaban, whose memory has been criticised; however, this saying makes clear the difference between the fruits of human wisdom and of ignorance.
