Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2779 — Intellect and its virtue

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), while addressing the people in a sermon, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The most virtuous of my Companions and the best of them are those who have the most taqwa (God-consciousness) and piety." At this Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said (by way of explanation): "The one among them who has the most taqwa is the most intelligent, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it in the same way."
Takhrij and grading: Some narrators in the chain of this report have been criticised; however, its text describes the mutual connection between taqwa and intellect as the standard of excellence of the Companions.
