وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ : حَدَّثَنَا وَقَّاصُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ ، أَنَّ الْمُسْتَوْرِدَ حَدَّثَهُمْ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَنْ أَكَلَ بِرَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ أَكْلَةً ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ يُطْعِمُهُ مِثْلَهَا مِنْ حَمِيمِ جَهَنَّمَ ، وَمَنِ اكْتَسَى بِرَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ ثَوْبًا ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يَكْسُوهُ مِثْلَهَا مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ ، وَمَنْ قَامَ بِرَجُلٍ مُسْلِمٍ مَقَامَ سُمْعَةٍ ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُومُ بِهِ مَقَامَ سُمْعَةٍ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Mustawrid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats even a single morsel at the expense of a Muslim (that is, by backbiting him or harming him), Allah Almighty will feed him a similar morsel from the boiling water of Hell; and whoever wears a garment at the expense of a Muslim (by violating his honour), Allah Almighty will clothe him with a similar garment of Hell; and whoever stands in a place of fame and show at the expense of a Muslim by finding fault with him, Allah Almighty will make him stand on the Day of Resurrection in a similar place of fame (of disgrace before the creation)."
Imam Abu Dawud recorded this hadith in his Sunan (no. 4881) and Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (no. 18020); its chain is of the hasan (good) grade, and Allamah al-Albani declared it sahih (authentic).
