قَالَ عَبْدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرَامُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، عَنِ ابْنَيْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِمَا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدُكُمْ بَابَ حُجْرَتِهِ ، فَلْيُسَمِّ ، فَإِنَّهُ يَرْجِعُ قَرِينُهُ الَّذِي مَعَهُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ، فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُمْ حُجْرَتَكُمْ ، فَسَمُّوا يَخْرُجْ سَاكِنُهَا مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ ، فَإِذَا رَحَلْتُمْ ، فَسَمُّوا عَلَى أَوَّلِ حِلْسٍ تَضَعُونَهُ عَلَى دَوَابِّكُمْ ، لَا يَشْرَكْكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي مَرْكَبِهَا ، فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا شَرَكَكُمْ ، وَإِذَا أَكَلْتُمْ ، فَسَمُّوا ، حَتَّى لَا يَشْرَكَكُمْ فِي طَعَامِكُمْ ، فَإِنَّكُمْ إِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا شَرَكَكُمْ فِي طَعَامِكُمْ ، وَلَا تُبَيِّتُوا الْقُمَامَةَ مَعَكُمْ فِي حُجَرِكُمْ ، فَإِنَّهَا مَقْعَدُهُ ، وَلَا تُبَيِّتُوا الْمِنْدِيلَ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ ، فَإِنَّهَا مَضْجَعُهُ ، وَلَا تَفْتَرِشُوا الْوَلَايَا الَّتِي عَلَى ظُهُورِ الدَّوَابِّ ، وَلَا تَسْكُنُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ مُغْلَقَةٍ ، وَلَا تَبِيتُوا عَلَى سُطُوحٍ غَيْرِ مَحُوطٍ ، فَإِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ نُبَاحَ الْكَلْبِ ، وَنَهِيقَ الْحِمَارِ ، فَاسْتَعِيذُوا بِاللهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَنْهَقُ حِمَارٌ ، وَلَا يَنْبَحُ كَلْبٌ إِلَّا حِينَ يَرَاهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you comes to the door of his chamber, he should mention the name of Allah, for in this way his devilish companion that is attached to him turns back; and when you enter your chamber, mention the name of Allah, for by this the devils who dwell there leave; and when you set out on a journey, mention the name of Allah when placing the first saddle-cloth on your animals, so that Satan cannot share in your mount, for if you do not do so, he will share in your mount; and when you eat, mention the name of Allah so that he cannot share in your food, for if you do not say Bismillah, he will share in your food. Do not leave rubbish lying in your chambers overnight, for it is Satan's sitting place; nor leave handkerchiefs in your houses overnight, for that is his sleeping place. Do not spread out as bedding the saddle-pads that are placed on the backs of animals; do not live in houses whose doors are not closed; and do not spend the night on roofs that have no protective parapet around them. When you hear the barking of a dog or the braying of a donkey, seek refuge with Allah, for a donkey brays and a dog barks only when it sees him (Satan)."
[Abd bin Humayd recorded it in his Musnad: 1115, and Abu Ya'la in his Musnad: 1782; its chain contains Haram bin Uthman, who is very weak and matruk (abandoned) according to the imams of hadith.]
