Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2584 — Various points of etiquette

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a long sermon to us, in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned: "Whoever peeps into his neighbour's house and sees a man's private parts, or a woman's hair, or any part of her body, it is a right upon Allah Almighty that He enter him into Hell along with the hypocrites who used to lie in wait to seek out the private matters of women; and he will not depart from this world until Allah disgraces him and exposes his private parts before all the onlookers on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever harms his neighbour without right, Allah will forbid Paradise to him and his abode is Hell. Beware! Allah Almighty will question a person about his neighbour just as He will question him about the rights of his household; so whoever neglects the right of his neighbour is not one of us. And whoever spends the night with deceit (treachery) in his heart towards his Muslim brother, his night and his morning are spent under the displeasure of Allah until he repents and reforms himself; and if he dies in that state, he will die upon other than Islam." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "Beware! Whoever deceives us is not one of us. And whoever backbites a Muslim, his fast becomes void and his ablution is broken (morally and spiritually); if he dies in that state, he will die like one who regards as lawful what Allah has made unlawful. And whoever goes about carrying tales between two people, Allah will set upon him in his grave a fire that will keep burning him until the Day of Resurrection, then He will send him into Hell. And whoever pardons his Muslim brother and swallows his anger, Allah will give him the reward of a martyr. And whoever transgresses against his brother, acts haughtily towards him and looks down upon him, Allah will raise him on the Day of Resurrection in the form of an ant which people will trample under their feet; then he will enter the Fire, and he will remain under Allah's severe displeasure until he dies. And whoever hears his brother being backbitten in a gathering and refutes it in his defence, Allah Almighty will turn away from him a thousand doors of evil in this world and the Hereafter; but if he does not defend him and rather is pleased with what they said, he will bear the same sin as those backbiters. And whoever says to his own slave, or another's slave, or to any Muslim (out of arrogance and indifference): 'La labbayka wa la sa'dayk' (I do not answer your call, nor is there any good fortune for you), he will be plunged into the Fire. And whoever harms a Muslim is not one of us, and we have nothing to do with him in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever hears of an indecency and spreads it is like the one who committed it, and whoever hears of something good and spreads it is like the one who did it. And whoever honours his Muslim brother has in fact honoured his Lord; so what do you think about this? And whoever is two-faced and double-tongued (a hypocrite) in this world, Allah will make for him two faces and two tongues of fire in the Hereafter. And whoever goes about (busily) to sever relations between two people will bear as much sin as the reward given to one who makes peace between two people, and the curse becomes binding upon him until he enters Hell, where his punishment will be doubled. Whoever goes to help and benefit his Muslim brother will have the reward of those who fight in jihad in the way of Allah. Whoever goes to backbite someone and expose his secret, his very first step will be as though he placed it in Hell, and Allah will uncover his private parts before all creation on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever goes to a close relative or a blood relation to visit him or ask after him in his illness, Allah will give him the reward of a hundred martyrs; and if he also maintains ties of kinship with him along with that, he will receive forty thousand good deeds for every step, forty million sins will be erased, forty million ranks will be raised, and it will be as though he worshipped Allah for a hundred thousand years. Whoever goes to create discord among relatives and to sever ties between them, Allah will be angry with him and curse him, and he will bear a sin like that of one who severs the ties of kinship. Whoever works to cause separation between a woman and her husband, the curse of Allah will be upon him in this world and the Hereafter, and Allah will forbid him from looking at His Face. Whoever leads a blind person to the mosque, or to his house, or for any of his needs, for every step he takes the reward of freeing a slave will be written for him, and the angels will invoke mercy upon him until he parts from him. Whoever walks with a blind person for a need of his until it is fulfilled, Allah will grant him a deed of freedom from Hell and from hypocrisy, will fulfil seventy thousand of his worldly needs, and he will remain immersed in the ocean of divine mercy until he returns. Whoever goes for a weak person's need or benefit, Allah will give him his record of deeds in his right hand. Whoever neglects his family and severs his ties of kinship, Allah will deprive him of the best recompense on the day He recompenses the doers of good, and he will be gathered with those who are destroyed until he seeks a way out, and where is the way out? Whoever relieves his brother of one of the hardships of this world, Allah will relieve him of the hardships of this world and the Hereafter, and will look at him with a look of mercy by which he will attain Paradise. Whoever goes to make peace between a husband and wife will have the reward of a thousand martyrs truly slain in the way of Allah, and for every step he will have the reward of seventy years of worship whose days were spent fasting and whose nights were spent standing in prayer. Whoever does a kindness to his brother and then reminds him of the favour, Allah will nullify his reward and render his effort fruitless. Beware! Allah Almighty has forbidden Paradise to the one who reminds others of his favours, the miser, the arrogant, the talebearer, the ill-mannered, the harsh, the coarse, the base-born and the habitual drinker of wine. Whoever builds a building on a highway to shelter travellers, Allah will raise him on the Day of Resurrection with a precious pearl on his forehead and his face shining for the people of the gathering, so that they will say: This is one of the angels; and no one like him will have been seen, until he draws near to (Sayyiduna) Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in Paradise, and forty thousand people will enter Paradise through his intercession. Whoever digs a well until its water becomes abundant and dedicates it to the Muslims will have the reward of everyone who performs ablution from it and prays, and he will have good deeds equal to the number of hairs of every human, jinn, beast, predator or bird that drinks from it, and for every hair the reward of freeing a slave, and on the Day of Resurrection he will intercede at the Basin of al-Quds for people as many as the number of the stars." It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is the Basin of al-Quds? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Basin, my Basin, my Basin. And whoever intercedes for his brother in some need of his, Allah will look at him with mercy, and it is a right upon Allah that He does not punish one at whom He has looked with mercy, provided that he was asked to intercede; and if he interceded without being asked, he will have the reward of seventy martyrs. Whoever goes to visit his Muslim brother will receive, for every step until he returns, the reward of freeing a hundred thousand slaves, the erasing of a hundred thousand bad deeds and the raising of a hundred thousand ranks." We asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not say: "Whoever frees a slave, it will be his shield from Hell"? He said: Yes, (that reward he will certainly receive,) but all the rest of the reward is preserved for him with his Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, in the treasures of the Throne.
This long hadith is fabricated (mawdu') against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the one accused of it is Maysarah bin Abd Rabbih; may Allah not bless him.
